Being Part of God’s Plan:  by Jim Liebelt

The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God.” “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her. (Luke 1:35-38 )

Mary has an honored place as being the mother of Jesus. In our Christian circles, we celebrate Mary as a virtuous young woman willfully taking on the responsibility of becoming mother of the Son of God. Still, it’s easy to overlook the difficulties Mary faced in accepting this role. She was likely in her mid-teens at the time of the angel’s message. An unmarried teen pregnancy in Jewish culture at the time would have been quite scandalous. She faced the prospect of being an outcast in her hometown. Further, imagine Mary attempting to explain the circumstances of her pregnancy to her parents and to Joseph, her fiancé. Being part of God’s plan was no doubt very difficult for Mary.  One of the characteristics that set Mary apart for her role was her willing     obedience. “May it be to me as you have said,” was Mary’s reply to the angel. This is simply amazing.  We, just like Mary, are part of God’s plan to carry His light and love to a needy world. Each of us have been given different roles in His plan, but none are unimportant. It might be difficult to see ourselves as being active participants in what God is doing in the world. It’s not always easy to say yes to God. Saying yes can mean facing difficulties and persecution. But, God always provides the means of sustaining us when we choose obedience to His desires for our lives.  As we celebrate Christmas this year, remember Mary as an example of the obedience God desires of us.

Advent Prayer

Lord, as I travel through the days that lead to the celebration of Your birth, help me keep an eye on the real Christmas.  Behind the Christmas family photos, let me discover Your divine and holy image.  In my Christmas card list, fill my heart with the entire human family so precious to You.   Before I Christmas shop, let me give first to the poor and the needy, the lonely and the despairing.  Among the carols, let my heart fill with sincere love and praise for You.  Give me the gift, this year, dear Lord of the real Christmas.

Gospel Reading
(Luke 14:12-24)

He said also to the one who had invited him, “When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not  invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid.  But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the     crippled, the lame, and the blind.  And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”  One of the dinner guests, on hearing this, said to him, “Blessed is anyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!”  Then Jesus said to him, “Someone gave a great dinner and invited many.  At the time for the dinner he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come; for everything is ready now.’  But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a piece of land, and I must go out and see it; please accept my regrets.’  Another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; please accept my regrets.’  Another said, ‘I have just been married, and therefore I cannot come.’  So the slave returned and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and said to his slave, ‘Go out at once into the streets and lanes of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.’  And the slave said, ‘Sir, what you ordered has been done, and there is still room.’  Then the master said to the slave, ‘Go out into the roads and lanes, and compel people to come in, so that my house may be filled.  For I tell you, none of those who were invited will taste my dinner.’ “

Epistle Reading
(2Thessalonians 1:1-12)

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. We must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of everyone of you for one another is increasing.  Therefore we       ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith during all your persecutions and the afflictions that you are enduring. This is evidence of the righteous judgment of God, and is intended to make you worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are also suffering.  For it is indeed just of God to repay with affliction those who afflict you,  and to give relief to the afflicted as well as to us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.  These will suffer the punishment of eternal    destruction, separated from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,  when he comes to be glorified by his saints and to be marveled at on that day among all who have       believed, because our testimony to you was believed.  To this end we always pray for you, asking that our God will make you worthy of his call and will fulfill by his power every good resolve and work of faith, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Gospel Commentary

The story of God’s compassion toward the poor appears only in Luke.  To share hospitality with the needy is to imitate God’s love which welcomes the lowly into the banquet of His Kingdom. “Blessed is anyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God” is an inspirational , although little-known beatitude.  The purpose of life is to join in the sharing of “bread in the Kingdom of God,” a partaking of the eternal love of God.  The parable of the “great dinner” exemplifies God’s Kingdom, imaged in the ministry of Christ and later in the Church.  The Kingdom is filled with outcasts and Gentiles, while the unresponsive privileged guests shut themselves out with their “excuses.”  “Compel the people” indicates that God’s plan is to fill His messianic banquet, and that even with refusals and excuses, His desire to fill His “House” will not be frustrated.  We will all be called to the “great dinner;” we will all be called to share in the eternal Kingdom of God.  If we are called today, how many of us are ready to participate?  How many of us will  “shut ourselves out” because of our many excuses.  “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

FAR (Fund for Armenian Relief)  Ayo! is in its final push to fund its #ReviveTheSoil project. #ReviveTheSoil aims to purchase a new tractor and a grain drill to benefit the 1,490 families of the Lori Berd Region and its nine surrounding communities. Lori Berd is the second poorest region of Armenia. While there’s fertile land in Lori Berd, much of it is just uncultivated because most people have insufficient agricultural tools which haven’t been replaced since the Soviet era. With the proper tools, more people will be able to grow crops for sale and consumption. With only a few days left in the campaign, you can help make this project a success. Even a small donation goes a long way. Give the families of Lori Berd the gift of opportunity this holiday season. JUNE  17, 2018 – FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
Father’s Day.

Across the United States today is observed as Father’s Day: a chance to reflect, with gratitude, on the deeper meaning of fatherhood.  While the surrounding popular culture may sometimes fail to treat fatherhood with due seriousness, the Armenian Church accords great reverence and respect to fathers.

The greatest tribute we pay to fatherhood lies in the way we apply the word “Father” to God. Our ability to call upon Him as our Father is a privilege and blessing—beautifully conveyed in a prayer from our Divine Liturgy:

“God of truth and Father of mercy, we are grateful that you have exalted us above even the [Old Testament] patriarchs. For you were called ‘God’ to them; but you are pleased to be named ‘Father’ to us.”

The priest recites this prayer right before the congregation sings the Hayr Mer—reminding us that it was Jesus, God’s only-begotten Son, who taught us to call God “Our Father.” And when we understand God in terms of His Fatherhood, we also understand godliness to be the duty to which all fathers are called.

This Sunday, thank the fathers who strive to provide such an example in your own life, and remember those who have departed this world in your prayers

Gospel Reading
(Matthew 12:38-45)

Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.”  But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.  For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so for three days and three nights the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth.  The people of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and see, something greater than Jonah is here!  The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and see, something greater than Solomon is here!  “When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it wanders through waterless regions looking for a resting place, but it finds none.  Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ When it comes, it finds it empty, swept, and put in order. Then it goes and brings along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and live there; and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So will it be also with this evil generation.”

**********************************************************************

Epistle Reading
(Romans 7:25-8:11)

Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!  So then, with my mind I am a slave to the law of God, but with my flesh I am a slave to the law of sin. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.  For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.  For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and to deal with sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,  so that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.  For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.  To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.  For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law–indeed it cannot,  and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.  But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.  But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.  If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you.

**********************************************************************

Gospel Commentary

In their request for a sign, some spectacular display, the scribes and Pharisees show their wickedness.  Even after so many miracles, they still ask Jesus for such a sign.  But Jesus does not cater to their hardness of heart.  His sign will be His Passion and Resurrection from the dead.  When the Israelites were delivered out of Egypt, by God’s mercy, they did not repent of their impure ways, and they returned to their impure ways.  The same holds true in this passage and even for us today.  Unless there is full-hearted repentance and the Holy Spirit dwells in a person, evil will return with even greater force.

FAR PROGRAMS (CASP)
Springtime Round of CASP Stipends
are Distributed to Vulnerable Children & Families.

Roughly 460 orphans and children of single-mothers living in six regions of Armenia and Javakhk recently received their financial stipends for spring 2018 through the Children of Armenia Sponsorship Program (CASP).

For many of these families, CASP is the crucial support they need to overcome some of their social and financial hardships and the help through which their children’s lives can be improved.
“With this stipend, I was able to buy the firewood we needed to heat our house last year. I spent the rest on the children’s needs, like school supplies, warm clothes, and food. It’s hard to raise three daughters without a consistent income,” said Meri Shahzadyan, 31, from
Khndzoresk whose husband, Rustam, died in a car accident in 2011.

Her three daughters, Shahane, 10, Nvard, 8, and Elen, 7, were accepted into the CASP program three years ago. They will receive their annual financial support from an American family until they turn 18. Currently, they live with their grandparents; all six of them barely survive on state benefits and stipends, which amount to roughly $250 a month.

Just before CASP recipients received their spring stipends at his church, Father Rafayel Khachikyan, pastor of the community of Meghri, encouraged beneficiaries to give back to their communities and schools. “You receive this support from women who even don’t know you. Some of them are not even Armenian, however they have embarked on a journey to help Armenians and to try and eradicate child poverty in these regions. Moreover, by their example, these women show the goodwill and love of our Lord,” he said, referring to the Women’s Guild of the Central Council, the group that manages CASP.

Distributions were followed by beneficiary home visits made by FAR staff members to better understand families’ needs and concerns, and how this particular support helps them to overcome certain difficulties.

The Children of Armenia Sponsorship Program (CASP) is a FAR project sponsored by the Women’s Guild Central Council of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern).

Armenian School & Sunday School Graduation and Promotion Day.

This Sunday, June 10th, we celebrate Promotion Day.  This is a day of recognition for everyone associated with the Sunday School and Armenian School Programs.  It is very easy to take for granted the effort needed to realize successful Program.  I, for one, as the Pastor of this Parish know and fully appreciate that effort.  It starts with our Armenian School Superintendent, Susan Ciaffi and our Sunday School Administrative Committee, Elise Durgarian, Julie Everleigh and Karyn Bilezerian, whose exceptional ability and sincere devotion to their ministries have set the tone for our Armenian School and Sunday School, which has trickled down to all of you, the Parents.  Your commitment to the importance of our programs is vital ensure the consistency and growth ministries.  Then of course there are the     teachers and staff, whose commitment and enthusiasm has inspired our children to learn whenever they attend.  Finally there are the students.  They have become a cohesive unit of our Parish – you might say the main stream of our Parish life.  Just think what our Parish would be like without our Children.  They provide an energy that becomes contagious to us all – inspiring us to a greater level of spirituality.  In that sense they become our Sunday School and Armenian School teachers.  This is one reason it is extremely important to have consistent participation.
On a bulletin board at the entrance of the Sheriffs Youth Ranch in Barnstable it was written that “it is better to build children than to repair men.”
This is the mission of our Sunday School and Armenian School Programs.

From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you all for an outstanding year.
May God bless our entire Sunday School and Armenian School Staffs
and all our children.

SCRIPTURE READINGS

Gospel Reading
(Matthew 12:1-8)

At that time Jesus went through the grain-fields on the Sabbath; his disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck heads of grain and to eat.  When the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, “Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.” He said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?  He entered the house of God and ate the bread of the Presence, which it was not lawful for him or his companions to eat, but only for the priests.  Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple break the Sabbath and yet are guiltless?  I tell you, something greater than the temple is here.  But if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless.  For the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”

**********************************************************************
Epistle Reading
(Romans 6:12-23)

Therefore, do not let sin exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions.  No longer present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness.  For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.  What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!  Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?  But thanks be to God that you, having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which you were entrusted,  and that you, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.  I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations. For just as you once   presented your members as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness for sanctification.  When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.  So what advantage did you then get from the things of which you now are ashamed? The end of those things is death.  But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the advantage you get is sanctification. The end is eternal life.  For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Gospel Commentary

The Pharisees are rigid in their legalism.  While the plucking of a few ears in a     neighbor’s field is permitted by Law, they consider it “reaping” and  unlawful work of the Sabbath.  Jesus provides Old Testament precedents of blameless violations of the Sabbath rule, thereby demonstrating that the law is not absolute over human need or service to God.  Jesus is Lord even of the Sabbath, thus Lord of all days including the Lord’s Day and the Author of the Law itself.  He gives precedence to mercy rather than ritualistic observance.

FAR PROGRAMS
Two Time Participant Finds
Great Benefit in CME Program

Dr. Sonya Palajyan, 59, accredits her love and dedication to medicine to her mother. “My mom once recited a poem she wrote about me becoming a doctor. I forgot the beginning, but the end went something like this: ‘I will become a doctor to first heal people’s wounds, then sing and dance with them’,” she said with a beaming smile.

Dr. Palajyan, a general practitioner and rheumatologist, has spent her career working in several clinics in Shirak Province and now works in the emergency unit of Gyumri Medical Center. She serves 15 to 20 patients a day. While she is also the first doctor in her family, her children decided to follow her path and are now doctors themselves. Her daughter Ani, 33, is a dentist, and her son Ghukas, 32, is a urologist.

Dr. Palajyan is sure that lifelong learning makes doctors better, especially rural doctors, who are often isolated from developments in their field. “Keeping up with the most current medical information is very important and also challenging. Some doctors lack financial resources to attend trainings; in this regard, Fund for Armenian Relief provided me with every opportunity to travel to Yerevan and learn the best practices applied at different medical centers,” she said.

Dr. Palajyan is a two-time beneficiary of FAR’s Continuing Medical Education (CME) Program , a professional development program geared to help doctors in rural Armenia update their skills primarily through training at leading medical centers in Yerevan. In 2014, Dr. Palajyan spent a month training in general therapy at Muratsan Medical Center. She was selected again for the program in 2018, where she spent time learning about the latest practices in rheumatology at Erebuni Medical Center.

“Every doctor should update their knowledge annually. I didn’t do it for four years and that’s why I applied to FAR’s program again. Consistency in the CME program is the most important element, and that motivated me to apply for the training for the second time,” said Dr. Palajyan.

Scripture Readings for Sunday, April 8th.

Gospel Reading
(John 1:1-17)
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being  in him was life, and the life was the light of all people.  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.  He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him.  He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him.  But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God,  who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.  (John testified to him and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ “)  From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.  The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Epistle Reading
(James 3:1-12)

Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.  For all of us make many mistakes. Anyone who makes no mistakes in speaking is perfect, able to keep the whole body in check with a bridle.  If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we guide their whole bodies.  Or look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.  So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great exploits. How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire!  And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature, and is itself set on fire by hell.  For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species,  but no one can tame the tongue–a restless evil, full of deadly poison.  With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God.  From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this ought not to be so.  Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and brackish water?  Can a fig tree, my brothers and sisters, yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh.

New Ayo! Project
Aims to Better Science Education in rural Armenia

Our Ayo! platform has decided to collaborate with two teachers in rural areas to help them achieve their shared goal: installing science labs in each of their schools. Ayo!’s recently-launched Fill the Gap. Build a Lab. project will ensure that students in regional schools have better access to higher-quality education.

Although public schools are free of charge, schools located outside of Yerevan typically lack both teachers and well-equipped classrooms. This means that many schools are without the proper resources needed to provide a high educational standard and equal access to education for students.

Teach for Armenia, a member of the Teach for All global network, aims to combat this widespread issue by providing equal educational opportunity to all children in Armenia through the recruitment and training of exceptional individuals to teach in schools located in underprivileged communities for a minimum of two years.

In the three years since Teach for Armenia was founded, many fellows—teachers of geography, biology, physics, chemistry and English language — have filled these vacancies, and thus brought higher-quality education to these regions of Armenia, where they have helped children to grow and fulfill their curiosity toward these subjects.

Lusine Vardumyan teaches at Getashen Village School in the Armavir Province. The village is located 70 km away from Yerevan, close to Turkish border. Since the school does not have any actual science labs, only theory can be taught in class. This impacts the level of interest toward these subjects, and results in a very low number of students who actually want to pursue science education and eventual careers in science. Lusine had the idea of building a physics and chemistry lab at the Getashen school so that students could have the opportunity to study the subjects through hands-on experimentation.

Venera Abovyan is another Teach for Armenia fellow who teaches biology and chemistry at Shamiram Village School in Aragatsotn Province. For years, children in the school didn’t have biology and chemistry classes because there was no one to teach them. Then Venera arrived. “It’s very difficult for children to learn these two completely new courses in theory without having a lab where they can see everything in practice and do experiments,” said Venera, who believes a science lab could be a significant investment for the betterment of the school’s students.

The labs will ultimately help to boost the resources of two schools, and also spark the curiosity of the children who are eager to learn.

Join Ayo! and say yes to brighter educational prospects for Armenia’s children!

GREAT LENT (MEDZ BAHK)
SUNDAY OF THE ADVENT (COMING)

(Jashou Sharagan (Midday Hymn)

You foretold the mystery of Your coming through the prophets of Israel, who You chose after Moses; they spoke through the Holy Spirit in many different examples;
O Savior, grant us mercy and forgiveness of our sins.

When the latter years drew near just as the seers had announced, You, our Saviour, arrived in the fullness of time and appeared among men having put on the form of a servant; O Savior, grant us mercy and forgiveness of our sins.

On the sixth day You created Adam in the lordly image; but he did not keep the commandment and was divested of the robe; wherefore You, O new Adam, visited the lost one during the sixth age; O Savior, grant us mercy and forgiveness of our sins.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages , Amen.

O temple of light without shadow and bride-chamber of ineffable Word, who   removed the grievous curse on Eve, our first mother; implore your only-begotten Son, the mediator of reconciliation with the Father, that He may please to take away from us all disorder and give peace to our souls.

******************************************************************
(To be recited by all at the end of the Church Service)

O Lord and Master of my life
take from me the spirit of laziness, faint-heartedness,
misguided ambition, and idle talk.
But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience,
and love to your servant.
Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own errors
and not to judge my brother;
For You are blessed unto the aged of ages, Amen.
(A prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian, a church Father.
Many people use this prayer as a Lenten devotion,
to be said and meditated upon several times a day)

Scripture Readings for Sunday, March 18th.

Gospel Reading
(Matthew 22:34-23:39)

When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him.  “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?”  He said to him, ” ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’  This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’  On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”  Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question:  “What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.”  He said to them, “How is it then that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet” ‘?  If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son?” No one was able to give him an answer, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions. Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples,  “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat;  therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practice what they teach.  They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of others; but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them. They do all their deeds to be seen by others; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long.  They love to have the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have people call them rabbi.  But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one   teacher, and you are all students.  And call no one your father on earth, for you have one Father–the one in heaven.  Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Messiah.  The greatest among you will be your servant.  All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted. “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you lock people out of the kingdom of   heaven. For you do not go in yourselves, and when others are going in, you stop them.  Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cross sea and land to make a single convert, and you make the new    convert twice as much a child of hell as yourselves. “Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the sanctuary is bound by nothing, but whoever swears by the gold of the sanctuary is bound by the oath.’  You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the sanctuary that has made the gold sacred?  And you say, ‘Whoever swears by the altar is bound by nothing, but whoever swears by the gift that is on the altar is bound by the oath.’  How blind you are! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred?  So whoever swears by the altar, swears by it and by everything on it;  and whoever swears by the sanctuary, swears by it and by the one who dwells in it;  and whoever swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by the one who is seated upon it. “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. It is these you ought to have practiced without neglecting the others.  You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel! “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.  You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may become clean.  “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside look beautiful, but inside they are full of the bones of the dead and of all kinds of filth.  So you also on the outside look righteous to others, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous,  and you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’  Thus you testify against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the prophets.  Fill up, then, the measure of your ancestors.  You snakes, you brood of vipers! How can you escape being sentenced to hell?  Therefore I send you prophets, sages, and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town,  so that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.  Truly I tell you, all this will come upon this generation.  “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!  See, your house is left to you, desolate.  For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the  Lord.’

Far Programs
Syrian Woman Opens Her Own Bakery Thanks to FAR’s Small Business Assistance Program!

Many people may not see beyond Lousig Barsumian’s quiet temperament. Indeed, her bright mind, inexhaustible energy, ability to plan and think of every detail, and her purposefulness may not all be revealed at first glance.

Lousig, 35, was born and raised in Syria. Six years ago, she left on a 10-day vacation to Armenia with her husband Arman, and their then three-year-old daughter, Alik. They decided to stay forever.

“On the third day of the trip, my husband decided that we would not go back,” recalled Lousig. In Syria, Arman, 38, had been a silversmith, and the area where his shop was located had already been hit hard by the war. They decided that it wasn’t reasonable for the family to return. They left all of their property in Aleppo, as it wasn’t possible to transport it to Armenia due to the war. Lousig’s wedding rings, however, which she had left in Syria for the trip, were later sent to her by her family. From that day on, they began their new life in Armenia—searching for jobs, a kindergarten, and a place to live.

“Three months later, I found a job as an assistant to an accountant, but it was tough as it was very different from the practices I knew in Syria. When I got pregnant with my son, I stopped working,” said Lousig, a professional accountant who had worked for 12 years at one of the leading interior design companies in Syria. When her son turned one, she was able to busy herself with her second craft—making and selling jewelry.

“I was making bijous (fancy, hand-made accessories) for 12 years in Syria. First, it was a hobby. Then it became a serious job. I was mostly working with beads, and I even gave classes. I also wanted to cook professionally, but this was a long-range plan,” said Lousig, with a warm smile. In Armenia, she has attended five different culinary courses organized by UNHCR and other organizations. “I learned Armenian and French cuisine, baking…. Yet, I found it difficult to start a business.”

The different organizations then helped Lousig to start. To make sure that taking culinary training was not a waste of time they recommended her to their partners. Soon, the lunch orders started to come in. Then people wanted cakes, which is what she most loves to make.

Nine months ago, Lousig registered her family catering company and bakery, which she currently runs out of her home, as Moon Bakery. Just a few days later, she found out that she received a grant and a zero-interest loan from FAR’s Small Business Assistance Program. She used the financial support to purchase a refrigerator, an oven, a mixer, and various containers and cake decorating equipment.

The program, which started in 2016, has already supported 17 Syrian-Armenian business owners, three of whom, including Lousig, are women, thus helping to lay a foundation for their economic integration in Armenia.

“If I get an order for a hard-to-cook cake, it makes me happy since I’m always up for the challenge,” said Lousig. She tries to make her cakes and biscuits as unique as possible as a way to try and develop her niche within the huge variety of similar businesses in Yerevan.

She also continues to help her husband, who was the first Syrian-Armenian to start selling silver at Vernisage market in Yerevan. Lousig designs silver jewelry that her husband later has crafted by local jewelers, and which are then exhibited and sold both in Armenia and abroad.

“In Syria, it was enough for just one person to work and help a large family to live a decent life. Yet, I can’t just sit around and do nothing. I would work as an accountant and would make handmade accessories on the side. I love working. Yet, here, in Armenia, you must work to live. Good thing that the number of orders I receive keeps increasing over time,” she said. Lousig is persistent now, and the family will stay in Armenia. “It was easy for us to set up. It was difficult to get things working and ensuring the means to make a living. Now, it’s become our usual life.”

On the eve of International Women’s Day, Lousig wishes all women good health and calls them to always create something of their own.

We at FAR are so proud to have supported this young, determined business woman. We wish all the best for you and your family, Lousig!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“O Lord and King,
grant me to see my own errors
and not to judge my brother.”

Find the Jesus within you!

GREAT LENT (MEDZ BAHK)
SUNDAY OF THE JUDGE

(Jashou Sharagan (Midday Hymn)

O Christ, You have committed to Your Church a true Commandment: to pray to God continually and at all times with spirit and understanding.
You established the word of Your ordinance as an example to us through Your action of passing the night in prayer to God;  in accordance with our nature by economy;  to You are all knees bent.
Therefore we also beseech You, O Christ, grant us to stand before You always with pure prayers as do the angels in heaven.
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages , Amen.
By the prayer of the Bearer of God, Your immaculate Mother, open the spiritual eyes of our hearts though Your mercy, that we may behold Your light, O Christ.
******************************************************************
(To be recited by all at the end of the Church Service)

O Lord and Master of my life
take from me the spirit of laziness, faint-heartedness,
misguided ambition, and idle talk.
But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience,
and love to your servant.
Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own errors
and not to judge my brother;
For You are blessed unto the aged of ages, Amen.
(A prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian, a church Father.
Many people use this prayer as a Lenten devotion,
to be said and meditated upon several times a day)

Scripture Readings for Sunday, March 11th.

Gospel Reading
(Luke 17:20 -18:14)

Once Jesus was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God was coming, and he answered, “The kingdom of God is not coming with things that can be observed;  nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There it is!’ For, in fact, the kingdom of God is among you.” Then he said to the disciples, “The days are coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it.  They will say to you, ‘Look there!’ or ‘Look here!’ Do not go, do not set off in pursuit.  For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day.  But first he must endure much suffering and be rejected by this generation.  Just as it was in the days of Noah, so too it will be in the days of the Son of Man.  They were eating and drinking, and marrying and being given in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed all of them.  Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot: they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building,  but on the day that Lot left Sodom, it rained fire and sulfur from heaven and destroyed all of them  –it will be like that on the day that the Son of Man is revealed.  On that day, anyone on the housetop who has belongings in the house must not come down to take them away; and likewise anyone in the field must not turn back.  Remember Lot’s wife.  Those who try to make their life secure will lose it, but those who lose their life will keep it.  I tell you, on that night there will be two in one bed; one will be taken and the other left.  There will be two women grinding meal together; one will be taken and the other left.”  Then they asked him, “Where, Lord?” He said to them, “Where the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.”  Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart. He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor had respect for people.  In that city there was a widow who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Grant me justice against my opponent.’  For a while he refused; but later he said to himself, ‘Though I have no fear of God and no respect for anyone,  yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually coming.’ ”  And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says.  And will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long in helping them?  I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them. And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt:  “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.  The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.  I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.’  But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’  I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.”

**********************************************************************

Gospel Commentary
The second coming of Christ will be like a fire of judgment on many who are so preoccupied with their daily pursuits that they are oblivious of the things of God.  The Kingdom of God requires urgent preparedness and decisive action – a constant awareness and fervent longing for Eternal Life.  To pray and not lose heart is a vital step in this preparation and action.  During this week evaluate your preparedness for Christ’s Coming.   Do we truly want Him unconditionally or do we want Him, BUT not yet!!!

Empowering Youth to Pursue Careers in IT
!

Through a collaboration between Gyumri Information Technology Center (GTech) and Shirak Regional College, one of the region’s high schools, Shirak students can gain practical experience at GTech, thus enhancing their knowledge and competencies. About 100 Shirak students intern at GTech two to three times per week. In addition, GTech staff frequently provide advice and feedback about course curricula at Shirak.

The head of the school’s IT department, Gohar Khachatryan, is certain that practical training is invaluable and can help students to specialize. “We have been collaborating with GTech for about 10 years now, and our students are enrolled in practical training. Moreover, our instructors took development courses at the center,” said Ms. Khachatryan. More, the advanced students continue their education at GTech after they graduate. Some even stay on and work there.

Larisa Yeghoyan and Susanna Mkrtchyan are enrolled in the faculty of Software Engineering and Automated Systems at Shirak Regional College, where they are seniors. They never miss the chance to enhance their programming skills at GTech and they want to go deeper into JAVA programming, in particular.

“What matters most for us is that here at GTech we are closer to the job market. The other priority for us is that we have an opportunity to put our knowledge into practice,” said Susanna.

“Yes, the IT environment here is very encouraging. Regardless of what you want to explore, it makes you want to continue,” added Larisa Yeghoyan.

GREAT LENT (MEDZ BAHK)
(Sunday of the Steward)

(Jashou Sharagan (Midday Hymn)
O You, Who powerfully created the supernal world of intelligible beings and
established in it the princes of the fiery spirits as stewards;
we bless Your inscrutable power.

O You, Who are the rich One and have created in lordly manner the sensible
second world and placed the first man as a steward in the garden of Eden;
we bless Your inscrutable power

O You, Who mystically built Your Church most high and have ordained in it the preacher of the Word of truth as a steward; we bless Your inscrutable power

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages , Amen.

O Tabernacle of Him Who cannot be borne, you carried Him, Who carries us, the creatures and you begot God in the body – Him Who was begotten of the Father without body; intercede for us, Mary, Mother of God.

******************************************************************
(To be recited by all at the end of the Church Service)

O Lord and Master of my life
take from me the spirit of laziness, faint-heartedness,
misguided ambition, and idle talk.
But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience,
and love to your servant.
Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own errors
and not to judge my brother;
For You are blessed unto the aged of ages, Amen.
(A prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian, a church Father.
Many people use this prayer as a Lenten devotion,
to be said and meditated upon several times a day)

Scripture Readings for Sunday, March 4th.

Gospel Reading
(Luke 16:1-31)
Then Jesus said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was squandering his property.  So he summoned him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? Give me an accounting of your management, because you cannot be my manager any longer.’  Then the manager said to himself, ‘What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg.  I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their homes.’  So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’  He answered, ‘A hundred jugs of olive oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty.’  Then he asked another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ He replied, ‘A hundred containers of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill and make it eighty.’  And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light.  And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes.  “Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much.  If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches?  And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own?  No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”  The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all this, and they ridiculed him.  So he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of others; but God knows your hearts; for what is prized by human beings is an abomination in the sight of God.  “The law and the prophets were in effect until John came; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is proclaimed, and everyone tries to enter it by force. But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one stroke of a letter in the law to be dropped.  “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and whoever marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery. “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day.  And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores,  who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man’s table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores.  The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried.  In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side.  He called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.’  But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony.  Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.’  He said, ‘Then, father, I beg you to send him to my father’s house–  for I have five brothers–that he may warn them, so that they will not also come into this place of torment.’  Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them.’  He said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’ ”

Gospel Commentary

The Steward is unjust in his actions, which are not condoned, but his shrewdness is praised.  This is meant as a lesson for the “sons of light” (Christians) who ought to be as shrewd about their pursuit of godliness as unbelievers are about their business.  This week compare the amount of time and effort you give to your work to the time and effort you give to your Christian commitment.

Far Programs
Gyumri Woman Depends on Soup Kitchen for Her Daily Meal!

For seven years, Asya Galstyan has visited FAR’s Gyumri Atinizyan Senior Center every weekday morning to receive her main meal of the day. The 77-year-old has two daughters. She used to live with her youngest daughter a few years ago, before she moved to Yerevan to be near her four children who live and study in the capital.

“They rent a house in Yerevan. My grandchildren—a historian, a sociologist, a military intelligence officer, and an economist—study well. The other day, I was watching a TV program, when my grandchild, the sociologist, was on air. I was so proud!” Asya proudly exclaimed while eating her soup. “I eat my meal here at the soup kitchen. I don’t take it home; I don’t want to use extra resources to heat it up.”

Many who frequent the soup kitchen often try to bring a portion of it home for later, or take away additional portions to homebound loved ones. Asya explained that she tries to save on everything. Her sole income is now her monthly pension of about $79. Like many pensioners in Armenia, Asya lost her retirement in the Soviet collapse. “I even wash clothes by hand because I don’t have a washing machine. No new TV either. I live in a poor house, which is clean and tidy though.”

With love and devotion, Asya recollected the times with her Russian husband, who took great care of her and the family. He passed away in 1983, leaving Asya to raise their two children alone. For years, she had been working at the yarn factory in Gyumri, where she’d even received a Best Worker award at one point. “Upon graduating from the textile college, I started working on the factory floor, even though I had the skills to be a master assistant. During Soviet times the worker’s job was more profitable, and I could make enough money to support my kids,” she remarked.

Last year, Asya received a free eye examination thanks to a joint effort between Ayo! and the Armenian Eye Care Project (AECP). Then she had surgery for her glaucoma. She is hopeful that she will soon fully recover her vision and be able to read again.

She is grateful to FAR’s donors for extending her a helping hand. “Our cook is a master, and those who distribute the food are nice and kind, too. Thank you for everything,” she said.

FAR’s Gyumri Atinizyan Senior Center serves meals five days a week to 160 elderly.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“O Lord and King,
grant me to see my own errors
and not to judge my brother.”

Find the Jesus within you!

GREAT LENT (MEDZ BAHK)
(Sunday of the Prodigal Son)

(Jashou Sharagan (Midday Hymn)
We bless You, eternal Father of Your Only Begotten Son, Whom You sent for the return of the lost sheep;  turn us also from sin through the passion of Your Son.

We exalt You, O Word and Light, Who found Your Lordly image by the light of the candle and restored the same;  restore us, who are fallen in sin, through Your Holy passion.

We praise You, O Spirit of Truth, in glory co-equal with the Father.  You renewed us who are waxed old by the sins of the old Adam; renew us also from our sin with the renewing of Your grace.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages , Amen.

Rejoice, O You, who are overshadowed by the power of the Most High and are the dwelling of the Holy Spirit by Whom you bore God the Word;  intercede for us, O Mary, Mother of God.

******************************************************************

Scripture Readings for Sunday, February 25th.

Gospel Reading
(Luke 15:1-32)
“Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him.  And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, “This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.” So he told them this parable:  “Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it?  When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices.  And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’  Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. “Or what woman having ten silver coins, if she loses one of them, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it?  When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’  Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Then Jesus said, “There was a man who had two sons. The younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of the property that will belong to me.’ So he divided his property between them.  A few days later the younger son gathered all he had and traveled to a distant country, and there he squandered his property in dissolute living.  When he had spent everything, a severe famine took place throughout that country, and he began to be in need.  So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed the pigs.  He would gladly have filled himself with the pods that the pigs were eating; and no one gave him anything.  But when he came to himself he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired hands have bread enough and to spare, but here I am dying of hunger!  I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you;  I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired hands.” ‘  So he set off and went to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him.  Then the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’  But the father said to his slaves, ‘Quickly, bring out a robe–the best one–and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.  And get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate;  for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!’ And they began to celebrate. “Now his elder son was in the field; and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing.  He called one of the slaves and asked what was going on.  He replied, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has got him back safe and sound.’  Then he became angry and refused to go in. His father came out and began to plead with him. But he answered his father, ‘Listen! For all these years I have been working like a slave for you, and I have never disobeyed your command; yet you have never given me even a young goat so that I might celebrate with my friends.  But when this son of yours came back, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fatted calf for him!’  Then the father said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.  But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been found.’ “

Gospel Commentary

Joy in Heaven for the repentance of each sinner and the illustration of God’s unconditional love and forgiveness of the repentant sinner is the main theme of this Gospel reading.  However, many of us don’t have unconditional love and forgiveness for those who wrong us and we act like the elder son of the Prodigal Son Parable.  During this week contemplate the words we pray:  “…forgive us our trespasses , as (in the same way that ) we forgive those who trespass against us,” and make the necessary adjustments

A Talented Young Lady Receives CASP Support!.

Fifteen-year-old Anna Gabrielyan dreams of becoming a pianist. She has been taking piano lessons for the last three years in order to be able to play as well as her mother, Geghecik and her brother Rafik. Anna also sings beautifully. She has participated in numerous song festivals, most recently in November. She is able to perform songs of different genres but Armenian folk is her favorite. She also loves to dance and paint.

Anna lives with her mother and her brother in the town of Meghri in Syunik Province. Geghecik, 39, has been out of work for a long time, and with few options for employment in Megrhi she struggles to make ends meet. Rafik recently returned from the army and resumed his studies at the Automobile Engineering Department of the Agricultural Academy of Armenia.

Anna’s father Ashot died in a car crash on the road from Agarak to Meghri in 2015 on his way back from work at the Agarak Copper-Molybdenum Factory. Since his death, it has been extraordinarily hard for this family. Their total income is just $95 a month, which includes the family allowance and Anna’s benefit as the child of a single mother. Geghecik also cultivates a small plot of land behind their house where they have a few persimmon trees whose fruit they sometimes exchange for other vegetables.

This year, Anna was included in the Children of Armenia Sponsorship Program (CASP), through which she will receive annual financial support from a U.S. family until she turns 18. CASP stipends allow families to afford the additional things they are often unable to, like firewood, gas, or school supplies. Despite the family’s hardship, Anna used her last stipend to buy Raffik new clothes upon his return from the army.

The Children of Armenia Sponsorship Program (CASP) is a FAR project sponsored by the Women’s Guild Central Council of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern).

BLESSING OF CHILDREN SERVICE

Each year, the Armenian Church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord to the Temple, or Dyarnuntarach, literally meaning “the bringing forward of the Lord.”

According to Biblical tradition, it was a custom in the Armenian Church for parents to bring their newly-born babies to the Temple of the Lord to present the child to God.

In keeping with this tradition, we blessed, Stella Elizabeth Hyde; Robert Anthony (Garabed) Avedisian; Natalia Marie (Aghavni) Avedisian; Luke Paul (Antranig) Polomski; Grace Arev (Nuver) Scopeski and Anoush Lillian Piligian, who were baptized within the last two years and present them to the Altar of the Lord on Sunday, February 11th during the Children’s Object Lesson.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“O Lord and King,
grant me to see my own errors
and not to judge my brother.”

Find the Jesus within you!

GREAT LENT (MEDZ BAHK)
(Sunday of the Expulsion
(Jashou Sharagan (Midday Hymn)
O Lord, You first gave the holy law of abstinence to the first-created, Adam & Eve; who broke the law by tasting the fruit and thereby tasting the bitterness of sin and death;  grant to us that we may taste the sweetness of Your commandments.

We have been smitten in our souls, by the Enemy, with many different wounds of sin, and in our manifold infirmities we are in need of You, O lover of mankind, to relieve our pains;  therefore, O Christ, Who loves mankind, heal us.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages , Amen.

You, Who came for the salvation of man by being born of the Virgin Mary, and by the life-giving resurrection called us, who were dead, to the resurrection of immortality;  through the prayers of Your mother, O Saviour, make us live.

******************************************************************
(To be recited by all at the end of the Church Service)

O Lord and Master of my life
take from me the spirit of laziness, faint-heartedness,
misguided ambition, and idle talk.
But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience,
and love to your servant.
Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own errors
and not to judge my brother;
For You are blessed unto the aged of ages, Amen.
(A prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian, a church Father.
Many people use this prayer as a Lenten devotion,
to be said and meditated upon several times a day)

Scripture Readings for Sunday, February 18th.

Gospel Reading
(Matthew 5:17-48)
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.  For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished.  Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.  For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. “You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not murder’; and ‘whoever murders shall be liable to judgment.’  But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgment; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, ‘You fool,’ you will be liable to the hell of fire.  So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you,  leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift.  Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are on the way to court with him, or your accuser may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison.  Truly I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.  If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.  And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell. “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’  But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. “Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.’  But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,  or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.  And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.  Let your word be ‘Yes, Yes’ or ‘No, No’; anything more than this comes from the evil one. “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’  But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also;  and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well;  and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile.  Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’  But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,  so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous.  For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?  And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?  Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Gospel Commentary

Jesus sets up for us a new way of life.  He is the fulfillment of the old law, the law of the Old Testament.  This new law dictates how we must live as Christians in spirit and in truth.  This week analyze this gospel reading.  How much of your life is lived by the standards of the old law and how much by the new law.

FAR Scholarship Help One Young Journalist
To Pursue Her Dreams!.

Marine Khachatryan, 23, has always wanted to be a journalist. From the age of 13, she followed the country’s political processes and the work of the journalists who covered them.

To achieve her goal, Marine entered Yerevan State University’s Faculty of Journalism in 2012. In 2013, she took her first professional steps when she covered news about the City Council Elections for Hetq online. Soon after, she got involved in broadcasting and starting working for A1plus.

In 2016, after finishing her bachelor’s degree, Marine applied to the Erasmus+ Program and went to England to participate in a two-week professional development training. The same year, she applied to and received FAR’s Ester Ajemian Scholarship Program just before she nearly decided to leave the country again, this time to pursue a master’s degree in journalism. Marine calls the scholarship a breakthrough and a turning point in her academic career, as it enabled her to stay in Armenia to continue her education. She’s currently working on finishing her master’s thesis at Yerevan State University.

Another one of Marine’s dreams came true at the end of 2017 when she received the one-year Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty Regional Reporting Fellowship, which includes a visit to the Radio Liberty Prague Broadcasting Center this spring.

“I started my work at Azatutyun/Radio Liberty in Yerevan on November 1st. To me, Azatutyun is the best media outlet because it follows the highest standards of journalism. Now, I can see it for myself. Choosing topics, working on the material, finding sources, preparing materials and editing them—it is all of the highest standards I’ve read about in journalism books,” said Marine. Her colleagues, she said, have become her role models in the field.

“Thanks to FAR, I stayed home. I live a meaningful life now; I like my job and my colleagues, since I am surrounded by experienced journalists. I have always imagined myself belonging to this place,” she added when talking about her daily routine at the Armenian bureau of Radio Liberty. “To me, journalism is an opportunity to change something.”

Marine frequently reports on people in need, with the hope that her work shines a light on social issues and catches the attention of the public and those in power.

Established in 2010, FAR’s Ester Ajemian Scholarship Program, which is funded by Ester Ajemian Ahnert, provides full tuition and monthly stipends to female graduate students of journalism in Armenia. Currently there are five students involved in the program. So far, more than 20 young female scholars have become proud beneficiaries.
