QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Jesus said to His Disciples:
“I am the bread of life.

Find the Jesus within you!

Last Sunday, January 21st, was the “festival” (Paregentan) day before the Fast of the Catechumens, which took place this past week. Even though we have heard this word during the Divine Liturgy, it is not only hard to pronounce, but many of us do not know what it means.

The Catechumens were people who were being trained and taught about  Christianity and Christian living in preparation for Baptism.  They would be  allowed to attend the Divine Liturgy. however they were asked to leave just  prior to the start of the Eucharist portion in which the faithful prepared to  receive Holy Communion.  Once they were baptized and received the  sacrament of initiation into the Community of the Faithful (the Church) they  became members and participated fully in the life of the Church.

The period of preparation would begin with a Fast and then the instruction  would last through Great Lent.  On Holy Saturday (the day before Easter) they would all be baptized and would receive their first Communion during  the Easter Liturgy.

ST. SARKIS THE WARRIOR:  Yesterday, Saturday, January 27th we remembered      General Sarkis, his son Mardiros and fourteen soldiers.  Sarkis was actually  not Armenian by nationality.  From a town in Cappadocia (a Roman province in Eastern Asia Minor – present day S. E. Turkey) Sarkis was a valiant and faithful soldier of Emperor Constantine’s army.  When Julian became  Emperor, Sarkis took refuge with his son under the protection of King Tiran of Armenia.  From there, he went to serve in the Persian army, where he and his son were able to convert many people to Christianity.  When he  refused to worship the pagan idols, the rulers killed both him and his son.  Fourteen of his faithful Persian soldiers risked their lives to bury his body and were beheaded.

Scripture Readings for Sunday, January 28th.

Gospel Reading
(John 6:22-38)
The next day the crowd that had stayed on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there. They also saw that Jesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone.  Then some boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.  So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus.  When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”  Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.  Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.”  Then they said to him, “What must we do to perform the works of God?”  Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”  So they said to him, “What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing?  Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”  Then Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.  For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”  They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”  Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.  But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe.  Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away; for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.

Epistle Reading
(2Timothy 3:1-12)
You must understand this, that in the last days distressing times will come.  For people will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,  inhuman, implacable, slanderers, profligates, brutes, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,  holding to the outward form of godliness but denying its power. Avoid them!  For among them are those who make their way into households and captivate silly women, overwhelmed by their sins and swayed by all kinds of desires,  who are always being instructed and can never arrive at a knowledge of the truth.  As Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these people, of corrupt mind and counterfeit faith, also oppose the truth.  But they will not make much progress, because, as in the case of those two men, their folly will become plain to everyone.  Now you have observed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness,  my persecutions and suffering the things that happened to me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. What persecutions I endured! Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them.  Indeed, all who want to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted

Gospel Commentary

The multitude had continued to pursue Jesus in the hope that He might miraculously solve all of their earthly problems as He had miraculously provided them with food.  He tries to turn their minds to spiritual concerns, telling them not to labor for perishable food but for the food of eternal life, which is available in the Son of Man.  He does not chide them for seeking and working, but for pursuing temporary satisfaction rather than eternal fulfillment.  The most fundamental work of God is true faith in Christ.  Since the Son and the Father are united in essence and will, those who are chosen by the Father will also believe in Jesus and receive eternal life

Far Health Programs
Rural Cardiologist Strengthens His Skills Through CME

Khoren Mkrtchyan is the sole cardiologist for Yeghegnadzor’s 50,000 residents. The 36-year-old examines at least five patients a day at the local medical center located in this village in Vayots Dzor Province. Often, there are days and even weeks when he works overtime to help all patients who need care, some of them urgently.

As a physician who has worked in this rural region for more than 10 years, Dr. Mkrtchyan feels there is room for improvement and he yearns to provide better service and more comprehensive medical care, which is why he applied to FAR’s Continuing Medical Education (CME) program for the second time during 2017. Through CME he was able to practice at Yerevan’s Heratsi Hospital Complex №1 in December. During his first experience with CME in 2014, Dr. Mkrtchyan focused solely on echocardiography at Marash Medical Center in Yerevan.

This time, the physician said he was able to do more. The four-week practical training enabled him to study the new approaches and tendencies within his specialization. He also created a network, and exchanged knowledge and expertise on specific cases.

“In the CME program, you communicate with doctors, you start reading medical publications again, you examine new and different approaches to treatment. I normally feel stagnant on a daily basis at Yeghegnadzor Medical Center, and this is a great opportunity to repeat lessons and acquire new experience,” said the doctor.

Dr. Mkrtchyan also highlighted the importance of the 93 Continuing Medical Education credits that all participants of CME receive once they compete the program. Those credits are now mandatory for doctors to acquire every five years, according to a new law on medical assistance and care. The overall amount of the credits needed every five years is 220.

In 2017, 113 doctors from Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh accessed professional development opportunities through the CME Program.
